Vallecito Creek
Now that you have navigated to the depths of the DTU site, you will find some out of the way destinations for fishing. Vallecito Creek is in SW Colorado and deemed to be one of the most pristine water sources in the state. The creek issues from the Weminuche wilderness and flows south to Vallecito Reservoir. From Bayfield, take CR 501 to the north end of Vallecito Reservoir and turn left on CR 500. Go approximately 2 miles to the parking area at the south end of the campground.
The Vallecito Creek trail begins at the north end of the campground. While there is good fishing above the camp, a fall will stop your journey up stream in about 1/2 mile. The best fishing begins 1.5 miles up the trail. After a steep climb up the hogback the trail returns to creek level. The creek fishes well at 100-150cfs and the deeper pools are an aquamarine color that defies description. The water stays cold here all year. As this is alpine terrain, the fish are opportunistic feeders and will rise dependably for attractor, caddis and mayfly dries. Most are wild rainbows from 6 – 14″, but there are a few cutts around the small creek tributaries. While I am hesitant to out my favorite spots, the travel distance and hike tends to keep the traffic down. The further you hike the better the fishing. Bring your 2 weight and be prepared for rain and hail in the canyon. (MH)
